Product Review: Quilt in a Cup
By Lynn Holland
When you were small, your mother probably took one of your drawings and made it into a plate or mug. You may still have it, even if you donít know quite where it is. Now that you are all grown up, you can take a quilt creation and make it into a Quilt in a Cup!
Quilt in a Cup is a 28-ounce insulated beverage holder kit. Itís a simple and clever way to spotlight a small quilt or other fabric (or paper) creation that is both beautiful and practical. You can pour a giant-sized portion of liquid directly into it, or itís large enough to hold a plastic soft drink (or water) bottle. Whatever you choose to put in it, it will keep it cool for a very long time. This unique kit makes a great personal gift that says you gave it some thought and effort (but not too much!)
Thereís no special expertise needed to put the cup together. The kit comes with the parts of the cup and special batting so all you have to add is the quilted fabric and glue it down to the inside part of the cup. Once the glue dries, just slip the inner part into the clear outer part and, Voila! Quilt in a Cup. The kit comes with complete instructions.
Quilt in a Cup is the invention of Dianne Springer, a multi-talented artist from Louisiana. Dianne recommends using ďGlue PinsĒ fabric glue on the quilted fabric to anchor it to the inside of the cup. Dianne also says that the inside fabric does not have to be quilted, so you can use any keepsake fabric you may have. This might be a cute showcase for some of the other funky fiber art or fancy papercraft creations too. I also thought that monograms or school emblems would be cute. The fabric necessary is about the size of a fat quarter, and the cup lends itself nicely to quick strip-piecing.
For those of us with lots of friends who have been hinting that you should make them a quilt, this is a great way to fill the need. It doesnít take tons of time or money to create something personal and useful. Itís a great novelty gift for any occasion, but one that wonít be forgotten or re-gifted. Furthermore, itís a great size for those of us who try to drink lots of water every day!
