Merry Mayhem Presents:

Case #114: The Case of the Scrappy Queen, Part 1b

Welcome to the world of Merry Mayhem, brought to Planet Patchwork by quilter, inventor, and internet entrepreneur, Merry May. Wave good-bye to your scraps as you make this beautiful queen-size quilt; or, use all new fabrics with a traditional Amish color scheme that'll really "float your boat!"

PART 1: CUTTING DEFINITIONS:

    "WOF" means "width of fabric."
"Plan A" instructions are for if you're using all new yardage.
"Plan B" instructions are for if you're using mostly scraps.

Light:

1. "Plan A:" (If you're using all new fabric) Cut four strips, each 2" wide by the length of the goods (parallel to the selvage).

"Plan B:" (If you're using scraps) You may wish to wait until later to choose and cut this fabric; it's for one of your borders (OK -
that's another clue!).

2. "Plan A:" From your remaining Light fabric, cut fourteen (14) strips, each 4 7/8" by WOF (see above definition). Then cut these strips into a total of 84
pieces, each 4 7/8" square.

"Plan B:" If using scraps, cut a total of 84 pieces, each 4 7/8" square.

Medium #1:

1. "Plan A:" Cut four strips, each 3 7/8" by WOF; then cut the strips into a total of forty (40) 3 7/8" squares. Cut two additional 3 7/8" squares; you should now have a total of 42 squares.  Next, bisect each square once diagonally to make a total of 84 triangles."Plan B:" Cut a total of 42 squares, each 3 7/8" square. Bisect each once diagonally to make 84 triangles. If you'll be using a Point Trimmer, trim all of the points of these triangles using Judy Martin's "B" configuration. You may do this by stacking up to 8 units at a time and trimming carefully with your rotary cutter.

2. "Plan A:" If you will be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut four (4) 8" wide by WOF strips, plus one additional 8" square. Set all of  these aside for now. If you will NOT be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut (or tear) a 36" long piece by WOF. Draw a 3 7/8" grid on the wrong side. (Note: Solid fabrics usually don't have a "right" or "wrong" side to them.) The grid will need to be 10 squares across (selvage to selvage) by 9 rows (parallel to the selvage, with about a 1/2" margin around the     perimeter of the grid). Next, draw diagonal lines in one direction only (see diagram below, which only shows the first two rows of your grid). Set this piece aside for now

.

"Plan B:" If you will be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut a total of   23 squares, each 8" square. Set them aside for now. If you will NOT be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut a total of 23 squares, each 8 1/2" square. Draw a 3 7/8" grid on the wrong side of each of these squares; grids should be 2 squares wide by 2 squares high, as
shown below. Draw diagonal lines in one direction only. Set these aside for now.

You're making good progress... keep going!

Medium #2:

1. Follow the same instructions under Medium #1's first set of directions (above), only this time using your Medium #2 fabric(s).

2. "Plan A:" If you will be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut seven 8" by WOF strips. Set these aside. If you will NOT be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut or tear a 56" long piece (by WOF), and draw a 3 7/8" grid on the wrong side of your fabric (see the above note in Medium #1 about "right/wrong" sides). This time your grid will need to be 10 units across (selvage to selvage) by 14 rows (parallel to the selvage, with about a 1/2" margin around the perimeter of the grid).

"Plan B:" If you will be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut 34 squares, each 8" square, and set aside for now.

If you will NOT be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut 34 squares, each 8 1/2" square. Draw a grid on the wrong side of each of  these, following the instructions under Medium #1 (above).

3. "Plans A and B:" Cut four 3 1/2" squares and set aside.

Dark:

1. "Plan A:" Cut eight 3 7/8" strips, plus four additional 3 7/8" squares; cut strips into a total of eighty (80) 3 7/8" squares, to make a total of 84 squares. Bisect each square once diagonally to make a total of 168 half-square triangles. As you cut these units, feel free to mix in various Dark fabrics as suggested in our "Fabric" recommendations on Page 1 of this series.

"Plan B:" Cut a total of 84 squares, each 3 7/8" square. Bisect each once diagonally to make 168 triangles. If you'll be using a Point Trimmer, trim all of the points of these triangles using Judy Martin's "B" configuration. You may do this by stacking up to 8 units at a time and trimming carefully with your rotary cutter.

2. "Plan A:" If you will be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut eleven 8" wide (by WOF) strips, plus one additional 8" square. Feel free to mix in various Dark fabrics as suggested in our "Fabric" recommendation on page 1 of this series. Set these aside for now. If you will not be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut or tear a 34" long piece (by WOF) and set aside. Also cut or tear a 56" long piece (by WOF) and set aside.

"Plan B:" If you will be using "Triangles on a roll, cut 57 squares, each 8" square and set aside for now. If you will not be using "Triangles on a Roll," cut 57 squares, each 8-1/2" square and set aside for now.
