Planet Patchwork Electric Quilt Design Contest:
Rules and Fine Print

Rules of Entry for the Planet Patchwork EQ Design Contest

1. Submissions will be accepted in Three Categories:

- Traditional quilts
- Contemporary quilts
- Holiday quilts

2. You may submit as many different quilts as you like, but each quilt can only be submitted once, and only in one category. Quilt designs entered in more than one category will be disqualified.

3. You may place your quilt in whatever category you like. If you think your Christmas-themed quilt has a better chance of winning in the Contemporary category than in the Holiday, you may submit it in the Contemporary category.

4. All submissions must be transmitted electronically, as e-mail attachments in the Electric Quilt project file format (pj4 or pj5). Only quilts designed using Electric Quilt 4 or Electric Quilt 5 software will be accepted. Submit your quilt as an EQ project file to planetpatchwork@gmail.com. Project files should include the quilt blocks you used in the design (if any), fabrics and/or color palettes used, and a single completed quilt design.

Your project file name must be the same as your name (for example, jenny_smith1.pj5). If you submit more than one quilt, please number them sequentially. The subject of your e-mail should be QUILT CONTEST followed by the category in which you wish to submit your design.

For example, if Judy Jones wants to submit three different quilts, one in each category, she should send three different e-mails as follows:

Subject: QUILT CONTEST - Contemporary
attached: judy_jones1.pj5

Subject: QUILT CONTEST - Traditional
attached: judy_jones2.pj5

Subject: QUILT CONTEST - Holiday
attached: judy_jones3.pj5

5. Include the following information on the notecard within the project:

  • Quilt name
  • Your name
  • Where you are from

6. Please do not submit any copyrighted work that should not be shared. All submissions must be your original designs.

7. Keep the number of fabrics (scanned or otherwise) to a minimum and make sure they are in the 8-bit/256-color bitmap format. We ask this to keep the size of your project reasonable. (Under 300KB is amazing, under 600KB is ok, anything 700KB-1MB is a bit excessive, and anything over 1MB is too much.)

8. Eliminate the following before sending:

  • all quilts other than the one you wish to submit
  • unused quilt blocks
  • unused block colorings!!
  • unnecessary scanned fabrics
  • unused fabrics

Leave the colors on the color tab as is... you do not need to delete anything from there.

In the body of your e-mail please include your full name, phone number, and mailing address. This information will only be used to contact you for contest-related business.

5. The deadline for submission is 12:01 a.m. EST December 1, 2005. Quilts will be judged by our panel of judges and winners will be announced on January 15th.

5. A number of quilts will receive honorable mentions and will be included along with the winning quilts on an official Planet Patchwork design contest CD-ROM. The creator of each quilt that qualifies for inclusion on the CD-ROM will receive a free copy of the CD (one per qualifying design). By submitting your quilt design to the Planet Patchwork contest, you agree to grant The Virtual Quilt company a limited copyright to reproduce and redistribute your design (for free and for sale) in perpetuity. All artists will be given full credit.

6. Awards are as follows:

- 1 Best of Show winner will receive $500 U.S. and a copy of the CD-ROM.
- 3 1st place winners (one in each category) will receive $250 and a copy of the CD-ROM.
- 3 2nd place winners (one in each category) will receive a prize package and a copy of the CD-ROM.
- Honorable mention winners (a maximum of 100) will receive a copy of the CD-ROM.

7. The contest is open to all members of the public except for present employees of The Virtual Quilt Company.

8. Liability for taxes is the sole responsibility of the winner.

9. Quilts will be judged on the basis of creativity and originality. All decisions of the judges are final.
