Merry Mayhem presents: Case #116

Seven Bags for Seven Sisters

©2000 Merry May

Big things can be made into small packages as you wind your way through this unusual 28” x 34” project

PART 2: We hope you've had a chance to rest up from all of that cutting and sorting during Part 1!

OK - let's get started on the "construction" part! First, you'll need to pull out the contents of Bag #1.

Using THREE 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles of Fabric E, and SIX 2 1/2" squares of Fabric D follow the diagrams below to make THREE 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Flying Geese units. Sew the above THREE Flying Geese units into a strip, as shown at right. Press seam allowances toward the top of the strip. Then return this portion to Bag #1.

Repeat the above procedure using the remaining pieces in Bag #1 to make SIX Flying Geese units from Fabrics E and C. Sew these into PAIRS, and then return them to Bag #1.

Now, while we're making Flying Geese units, let's move on to Bag #2. Look through the contents and find your FOUR 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles of Fabric E, plus your EIGHT 2 1/2" squares of Fabric B. Use these pieces to make FOUR Flying Geese units, following the same diagrams as above. (Don't sew them together into a row this time, though; leave them as individual units for the moment.)

Next, sew your 2" x 12" strip of Fabric B between your TWO 1 3/4" x 12" strips of Fabric F. Press seam allowances toward your Fabric B strip. Cut this into FOUR 2 1/2" wide segments. These units should now measure 2 1/2" x 4 1/2".

Sew each of these units to the bottom of each of your FOUR Flying Geese units so they look like the diagram at right (they should look a little like a mini house, or an arrow). Lay out these FOUR units, along with your remaining FIVE 4 1/2" squares of Fabric B so they look like the diagram below. Sew the units into rows; then sew the rows together to complete your "Frame Block." You may now return it safely to Bag #2.

Now you can go on to  Part 3!
