Product Review: ARDCO Precision Metal Quilt Templates

By Addy Harkavy <addy@TheExperimentalQuilter.com>

Ardco has long had a reputation for producing top-quality, precise templates, and -- after testing these templates -- I have nothing but good things to say about them.

The templates are metal, white "enameled" on the front and roughly textured on the back, so they adhere well to fabric. The edges are smooth and are rotary cutter friendly.

I tried templates for both hand piecing and machine. The hand piecing templates permit quilters mark both the stitching and cutting lines; the machine piecing templates are "solid", enabling quilters to use a rotary cutter.

The Bear's Paw Pattern -- for machine piecing, cut with a rotary cutter -- enabled me to cut precise pieces that went together without a hitch. The set I marked for hand piecing gave equally satisfactory results. The Bear's Paw set I tested (BPS-12A) made a 12" block and sells for $12.50. A worthwhile investment, in my opinion, for a template set that will last for many generations and could be a treasured addition to any quilter's or guild's template library.

Ardco's production is limited, and most templates are sold at quilt shows. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Smith, are pleasant and helpful, and they have an exhaustive catalog that shows the huge variety of templates (patterns and sizes) the company offers. For a catalog or more information, phone or write to Quiltsmith, Ltd. 252 Cedar Road, Poquoson, VA 23662. The company can be reached by phone at 757-868-8073 or 800-982-7326 (e-mail <rquilt@erols.com>). Quilters will find Mr. and Mrs. Smith friendly, helpful, and professional.
