Individual Block instructions
Section 12 – Crazy Butterfly
(Make one 8" block)

(A) Black
Cut 4 squares 2 1/2"
Cut 1 square 4 7/8", cut once diagonally

(B) Green
Cut 1 square 4 7/8", cut once diagonally

(C) Red
Cut 4 squares 2 1/2"

Assembly & Block Construction of Crazy Butterfly


1.      Sew (1) one (A) Black and (1) one (B) Green HST together as shown in diagram 1.
2.      Repeat Step 1 one more time for a total of 2 units. Press and set aside.
3.      Sew (1) one (A) Black and (1) one (C) Red 2 1/2" square together as shown in Diagram 2.
4.      Repeat one more time for a total of 2 units. Sew the two units together as shown in Diagram 2.
5.      Repeat Steps 3 and 4 one more time for a total of 2 units.
6.      Referring to the Block Construction diagram sew the units together as shown.
7.      Press. Measurement check –  Block should measure 8 1/2”


Section 12 – Filler Checkerboards
(Make one 2" x 14" & 2" x 12" rectangles)

(B) Green
Cut 3 squares 2 1/2"

(C) Red
Cut 1 square 2 1/2"

(D) Yellow
Cut 3 squares 2 1/2"

(E) Purple
Cut 3 squares 2 1/2"

(F) Blue
Cut 3 squares 2 1/2"



1.      Referring to diagram sew (1) one 2 1/2" square in the following order (D) Yellow, (C) Red, (B) Green, (F) Blue, (E) Purple, (D) Yellow and (B) Green to form the first checkerboard filler block. 2 1/2" x 14 1/2".
2.      Press and set aside.
3.      Referring to the second diagram row sew (1) one 2 1/2" square in the following order (F) Blue, (E) Purple, (D) Yellow, (B) Green, (F) Blue and (E) Purple to form the second checkerboard filler block. 2 1/2" x 12 1/2".
4.      Press and set aside.

Section 12 – Wrapped up Star
(Make one 10" block)

(A) Black
Cut 4 squares 2 1/2"
Cut 1 square 4 1/4", cut twice diagonally
Cut 1 rectangle 1 1/2” x 10 1/2"

(B) Green
Cut 1 rectangle 2" x 6 1/2"

(C) Red
Cut 4 squares 2 3/8", cut once diagonally
Cut 1 rectangle 1 1/2" x 8"

(D) Yellow
Cut 1 rectangle 2" x 9 1/2"

(E) Purple
Cut 1 rectangle 2" x 9"

(F) Blue
Cut 1 rectangle 2" x 8"



1.      Sew (1) one (C) Red HST to the left hand side of (1) one (A) Black QST. Refer to diagram 1 for placement. Unit is one half of a flying geese unit.
2.      To the right hand side of the unit just sewn in Step 1 sew (1) one (C) Red HST. See diagram 2 for placement. This is one flying geese unit.
3.      Repeat Steps 1 & 2 three more times for a total of 4 flying geese units.
4.      Referring to diagram 3 sew (1) one (A) Black 2 1/2" square to each side of one flying geese unit.
5.      Repeat Step 4 one more time for a total of 2 rows
6.      Sew one flying geese unit to opposite sides of one (F) Blue 3 1/2" square. See diagram 4 for placement.
7.      Under block construction you will be sewing the rectangles in the order listed in diagram.
8.      Sew to the bottom one 2" x 6 1/2" rectangle.
9.      To the right hand side sew one 2" x 8" rectangle.
10.     Back to the bottom (under the Green rectangle) sew (C) Red 1 1/2" x 8" rectangle.
11.     To the left hand side sew one (E) Purple 2" x 9" rectangle.
12.     To the top sew one (D) Yellow 2" x 9 1/2" rectangle.
13.     Last one sew one (A) Black 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" rectangle to the left hand side.
14.     Measurement check - block should measure 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" square.

Section 12 – Filler Triangles
(Make one 2" x 8" rectangle)

(A) Black
Cut 2 squares 2 7/8", cut once diagonally

(E) Purple
Cut 2 squares 2 7/8", cut once diagonally

Assembly & Block Construction of the Filler Triangles


1.      Sew (1) one (A) Black & (1) one (E) Purple HST together as shown in diagram 1.
2.      Repeat Step 1 three more times for a total of four units.
3.      Sew the units together as shown in the color picture.
4.      Press and set aside.

Section 12 – Evergreen Filler
(Make one rectangle 4" x 14")

(A) Black
Cut 6 squares 2 7/8", cut once diagonally

(B) Green
Cut 1 square 5 1/4", cut twice diagonally (you will have 2 pieces left)

(C) Red
Cut 1 square 5 1/4", cut twice diagonally (you will have 2 pieces left) Cut 1 rectangle 2 1/2" x 1 7/8"

(D) Yellow
Cut 1 square 5 1/4", cut twice diagonally (you will have 2 pieces left)

(F) Blue
Cut 2 rectangles 2 1/2" x 1 7/8"


Assembly & Block Construction of the Evergreen Filler Block


1.      Sew (1) one (A) Black HST to the left hand side of (1) one (B) Green QST as shown in Diagram 1.
2.      To the right hand side of the unit sewn in Step 1 sew (1) one (A) Black HST. See diagram 1 for placement.
3.      Press and set aside.
4.      Repeat Steps 1 thru 3 one more time for (D) Yellow.
5.      Repeat Steps 1 thru 4 using (C) Red and (D) Green.
6.      Sew (1) one (F) Blue, (C) Red and (F) Blue 2 1/2" x 1 7/8" rectangles together. Press.
7.      Refer to block construction diagram to sew all the units together.
8.      Press and set aside.

Section 12 –Checkerboard Star
(Make one 12" block)

(A) Black
Cut 4 squares 4 1/2"
Cut 1 square 5 1/4", cut twice diagonally
(B) Green
Cut 4 squares 1 7/8"

(C) Red
Cut 1 square 5 1/4", cut twice diagonally
(D) Yellow
Cut 5 squares 1 7/8"

(F) Blue
Cut 2 squares 5 1/4", cut twice diagonally

Assembly & Block Construction of the Checkerboard Star


1.      Referring to diagram 1 begin to sew the checker board for the center of the star. Row 1 sew one square (D) Yellow, (B) Green and (D)
Yellow together.
2.      Repeat Step 1 one more time for a total of 2 Rows. Row 1 and Row 3.
3.      For the center row sew one 1 7/8" square (B) Green, (D) Yellow and (B) Green together.
4.      Sew the rows together as shown in diagram 1. Press and set aside.
5.      Sew (1) one (F) Blue and (1) one (A) Black HST together as shown in diagram 2.
6.      Repeat Step 5 three more times for a total of 4 units. First half of the block.
7.      Sew (1) one (F) Blue and (1) one (C) Red HST together as shown in diagram 2.
8.      Repeat Step 7 three more times for a total of 4 units. Second half of the block.
9.      Referring to the finished block in diagram 2 sew the units together as shown.
10.     Referring to the block construction diagram lay the rows out as shown.
11.     Sew the rows together as shown to complete the block.
12.     Measurement check – Block should measure 12 1/2"


Assembly for Section 12
Finished block size is 18" x 24"
Referring to the color photo sew your blocks together as shown
