Finishing Instructions

Now what you have completed the set of monthly blocks, it's time to set them in the quilt. This final installment provides instructions for completing the stripe blocks and the spinning star blocks that fill out the design, and the borders.

Finishing Cutting for Stripe Blocks

Make a total of 4 Stripe blocks of each color

(A) Black
48 squares 4 1/2"
32 squares 4 7/8", cut once diagonally

(B) Green
4 squares 4 1/2"
4 squares 4 7/8", cut once diagonally

(C) Red
4 squares 4 1/2"
4 squares 4 7/8", cut once diagonally

(D) Yellow
4 squares 4 1/2"
4 squares 4 7/8", cut once diagonally

(F) Blue
4 squares 4 1/2"
4 squares 4 7/8", cut once diagonally

(G) Black & White
16 squares 4 1/2"
16 squares 4 7/8", cut once diagonally

Stripe Blocks

12" finished block, Make blocks (4) four blocks of each color

NOTE – You will need to make (4) four Blue, Yellow, Red, & Green stripe blocks.

1. Sew (1) one (G) Black and White HST to (1) one (A) Black HST. See diagram 1 for placement.

2. Repeat Step 1 one more time for a total of (2) two units. Press and set aside.

3. Sew (1) one (A) Black HST to one (B) Green HST. See diagram 2 for placement.

4. Repeat Step 2 one more time for a total of (2) two units.

5. Referring to diagram 3 sew (1) one (G) Black & White 4 1/2" square to the left hand side of one unit made in step one.

6. Sew another (G) Black & White 4 1/2" square to the other side of unit sewn in Step 5.

7. Repeat for each row as shown in Block Construction diagram.

8. Sew rows together and repeat for the remaining colors for a total of 4 Stripe Blocks of each color.

9. Press and set aside.

10. Measurement check block should measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2".

Spinning Stars Finishing Cutting

(A) Black
32 squares 3 1/2"
16 squares 3 7/8", cut once diagonally

(B) Green
8 squares 3 7/8", cut once diagonally

(C) Red
8 squares 3 7/8", cut once diagonally

(D) Yellow
4 squares 3 7/8", cut once diagonally

(E) Purple
8 squares 3 7/8", cut once diagonally

(F) Blue
4 squares 3 7/8", cut once diagonally

(G) Black & White
32 squares 3 1/2"
16 squares 3 7/8", cut once diagonally

Spinning Star Blocks

12" finished block, Make blocks according to note below of each color
NOTE – You will need to make (1) one Blue, Yellow, (2) two Red, Green, & Purple Spinning Star blocks.

11. Sew one (1) Black HST to one (1) Yellow HST. See Diagram 1 for placement.
12. Repeat three (3) more times for a total of 4 units.
13. Referring to Diagram 2 sew 2 of the units sewn in step 1 together. Press.
14. Repeat one more time for a total of 2 units.
15. Sew the two units together sewn in step 13. See Diagram 3 for placement. Press and set aside.
16. Sew one (1) Yellow (D) HST to one (1) Black and White (G) HST. See Diagram 4 for placement.
17. Sew one (1) Black and White (G) 3 1/2" square to the right hand side of the unit just sewn. See diagram 4 for placement.
18. Repeat step 17 three (3) more times for a total of 4 units. Press.
19. Referring to Diagram 5 sew the units together to form rows.
20. Sew the rows together to complete the block.
21. Press and set aside.
22. Measurement check block should measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2".
23. Repeat all steps for each color.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

1. Sew the following together to complete Row 1: Block 5, Block 7, Red Stripe Block, Blue Strip Block, Block 1 & Block 4. Press and label Row 1.

2. Sew the following together to complete Row 2: Block 2, Red Stripe Block, Green Spinning Star, Red Spinning Star, Blue Stripe Block and Block 6. Press and label Row 2.

3. Sew the following together to complete Row 3: Red Stripe Block, Purple Spinning Star Block, Red Stripe Block, Blue Stripe Block, Yellow Spinning Star Block and Blue Stripe Block. Press and label Row 3.

4. Sew the following together to complete Row 4: Yellow Stripe Block, Green Spinning Star, Yellow Stripe Block, Green Stripe Block, Purple Spinning Star and Green Stripe Block. Press and label Row 4.

5. Sew the following together to complete Row 5: Block 11, Yellow Stripe Block, Red Spinning Star Block, Blue Spinning Star Block, Green Stripe block and Block 9. Press and label Row 5.

6. Sew the following together to complete Row 6: Block 12, Block 10, Yellow Stripe Block, Green Stripe Block, Block 8 and Block 3. Press and label Row 6.

7. Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.

BORDERS

(A) Black if you are piecing your borders use these measurements.
Cut 7 strips 5 1/2" x 44"

Sew the strips together and sub cut into the following lengths:
Cut 2 strips 5 1/2" x 72½"
Cut 2 strips 5 1/2" x 82½"

(A) Black Lengthwise with no seams
Cut 2 strips 5 1/2" x 72 1/2"
Cut 2 strips 5 1/2" x 82 1/2"

8. Sew the borders to the left and right side of the quilt. (5 1/2” x 72 1/2½") Press

9. Sew the remaining border pieces to the top and bottom of the quilt. (5 1/2" x 82 1/2")

Layer and quilt as desired.
